Alpine Quietude

The waves stretch to infinity and beyond in the high alpine lake–or at any rate, it certainly seems that way. The silence of the day is absolute, as well, with not a single human sound disturbing the waves as they reach for the edges of forever. Nothing save the gentle lapping of the waves upon the shore, beckoning it to follow them to everywhere, breaks the concentration of the perfect afternoon. A bird, high overhead, calls once, then falls silent, another victim of the siren call of the waves. The waves stretch ever onward and the quietude of the day continues on.

Truly, the magic of this particular lake (Lake San Cristobal near Lake City, Colorado) at this particular moment cannot be overstated. The gentle, rhythmic, waves were in no hurry to go anywhere in particular; the sun, shining so brightly and warm on this spring day, breathed hope and promise everywhere. The snow capped mountains were slowly giving up their white tops in favor of green ones, and the day… ah, the day was perfect.

The day sang out in quietness, the waves continued their march to infinity, and all was perfect.

Peek-A-Boo Mustang

Deep in the heart of the Monero Mustang Sanctuary there exists a small watering hole. It isn’t really a big watering hole, really, but it does include the most important bit: water. It also includes another important bit: a berm that partly shields the water hole from the surroundings. And where there is water, the wild mustangs will come. But these are wild mustangs. Although familiar with humans, they are not accustomed to the human hand and certainly not in the mood to be domesticated. So, they maintain a good deal of caution around us (rightly so, too, since many of the mustangs in the sanctuary have been rescued from human abuse) and sometimes are not in the mood to be seen.

This is La Vieja, a mare caught peeking over the berm next to the water hole, just to see what, or who, was out there. The “who” of course was myself, camera in hand, capturing the moment. We looked at each other for a brief moment, acknowledging each other. That moment was brief and La Vieja turned away from the berm for that much needed and ever so pleasant drink.

Postscript: Just a couple of days after this photo was taken La Vieja became a mother to a wonderful filly. You can bet that both of them are now at the water hole, playing peek-a-boo.

There are different sizes of this photo available at our portfolio. Peek-A-Boo Mustang is available for purchase, as well, and you can have this print framed and delivered right to your door.

Reeding Answers

The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind.

Bob Dylan pondered many questions in that iconic song. And of course, there answers were, well, blowin’ in the wind. And that in turn conjures up images of things blowing in the wind, and what better thing to represent that than a simple reed?

We hum (or sing if we are so inclined) that song quite a lot, but often, with a surprisingly cheery lilt. Yet, when it comes down to it, the song isn’t really about cheery things at all, and the questions it asks are not easy ones to ask or answer. Mountains washing to the sea? Cannon balls flying? Doves “sleeping” in the sand?

This tune was indeed running through my head as I was composing this shot. I didn’t, and don’t, have any answers, but it seemed to me that this shot represented the song quite well. The wind for me continues to blow: perhaps one day it will carry to me the answers.

A really great bunch of folks from Flickr here in Albuquerque decided to take a little tour of the Albuquerque Botanical Gardens today–it sounded like a ton of fun to hang out with like minded photo folks, enjoy a wonderful day, and, oh yeah, take some photos. Their mistake was putting the information about this in a public place where I could find it. And find it I did.

Luckily for me they put up with me for the outing. Whew.

And it was really very fun! We wandered around the area cameras in hand, looking and snapping everything and anything. Although the fall colors had mostly passed, a few great shots remained. Besides, the skies were absolutely wonderful, the day calm, the temperature up and it was a photographer’s dream day.

This shot is from the Japanese Garden section. The bridge goes absolutely nowhere, but I cropped it so it looks like to has a purpose (as far as I can tell, its one and only purpose is to sit there and wait for me to take a picture of it.), and with the still waters, the reflection made a nice shot. I just had to take it from across the water. And, amazingly, I didn’t even fall in as I was taking the picture. Maybe next time.

Fall is almost over, but the bridge is there waiting for the next season. Or tomorrow. Whichever comes first.
