A crow takes flight into the late afternoon over the Colorado [...]

Taking Flight

The afternoon was perfectly silent–nothing save the whisper of the wind could be heard in the canyon. Perhaps, if one used their imagination, one might hear the gentle gurgle of water from the Colorado River, or, perhaps that was just wind again. The heat is oppressive, it being summer, and not a creature is stirring.

The afternoon was getting a little long in the tooth, as well. The sun had long ago decided that it was time to head for bed, and although it was not quite dinner time yet, the sun was heading that way. This worked out really well, because the canyon walls, with beautiful mauve shades to begin with, really began to come alive. For colors are largely immune to heat. The canyon continued its utter stillness.

Save for the crow that has decided to move from here to there. The “whoosh” of its wings breaks the silence and just like that the afternoon’s quiet is no more. The crow took off from a large rock outcrop and is headed off in search of prey, or perhaps just a change of view.

After a moment, the sound faded into the distance and silence descended once again.

The moon above Bryce Canyon National Park at sunrise. Seen from within the canyon [...]

You see different sizes and purchase this photo from our portfolio.

There is something deeply magical about sunrise in Bryce Canyon National Park. And there is something even more magical about being in the canyon as the sun begins it ascent into the day. And then, if that isn’t enough, there is something down right awe-inspiring to look up and out of the canyon to find the moon high above you.

Combining all of these elements together at one time makes it hard to remember to breath. Within the canyon, the air is quiet (oh so very quiet) and still, and the only sound you can hear is your breathing (assuming you do manage to remember to do that). The rocks come alive with their own dance of the shadows, and their magic fills the air.

Before long the sun crests over the canyon rim, bringing another kind of beauty. But in the meantime, the moon over Bryce reigns supreme.

A stunning black and white rendition of the Cañada Camada Overlook at Tent Rocks National [...]

Hoodoos in New Mexico. Who knew? How cool.

And we find those Hoodoos in the Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, located somewhere between Santa Fe and the middle of nowhere. Then again, that describes many different locations in our wonderful state, but that is just part of our charm here.

This particular shot is from the Cañada Camada Overlook, which is more or less just outside of the National Monument. Or maybe still in it. The lines are a little fuzzy out there, at best, and so it is hard to say exactly–come to think of it, the roads are a little fuzzy, too. Either way, however, the overlook gives one a great view of many of the hoodoos of Tent Rocks.

What do you think about Black and White? Like it? Hate it? Love it? Think it went out of style with Ansel Adams? Let us know in the comments below!
