Ah, to be young again. For youth has an innocence all of its own about it; a purity and a sweetness and especially eyes that see everything for the very first time. And when you are just five days old, you are seeing absolutely everything for the very first time.

This is Esmeralda, a gosling, and yes, she is just five days old. When you are her age the world is fresh and bright and each moment is a brand new experience. This particular experience happened as she ended up in a patch of pansies in the bright morning sunlight. At first, she was a little confused, but she quickly settled into her surroundings and within mere moments decided that the sunlight, coupled with the small dish of water she was in, in her own private garden, was as wonderful a spot as she could imagine. You could see her stretch and enjoy the sun.

It was right about then that she noticed this strange object close to her (you and I would know that object as a “camera”), moving ever so slightly, seemingly aligning it directly with her. It made a few soft clicks, but most important, it made the person behind smile brightly. And in that moment, I too, was young again.

There are different sizes of this photo available at our portfolio. Flower Child is available for purchase, as well, and you can have this print framed and delivered right to your door.

Gimmie Sun!

They were quiet about their plans, and said absolutely nothing to anyone. After all, stealth is their middle name. They plotted and they schemed, going over their plan time and again until they had it absolutely perfectly. For, after all, they would have but one chance to get this right and they could not mess up their chance.

They waited for the perfect opportunity, daring not to barely breath, trying to hold in their excitement and curb their anticipation. Suddenly, they saw their opportunity! Quick as a flash they broke through the new failed Spring Snow and burst out to freedom! At last! At last they had found the sun again! Their daring plan to break free of the snowbank went off perfectly and the two daises once again were free to drink up the warmth of the afternoon sun.

Gimmie Sun became a rallying crying for all daisies and soon after more of them broke for the sun, following in the footsteps of our intrepid heros.

OK. So, that might be a wee bit melodramatic, but this was taken on the first day of Spring and naturally, it snowed. That didn’t stop me from taking a picture of a daisy though. Spring is here! Gimmie Sun!

Something Old,
Something New,
Something Borrowed,

Hey…. borrow… borrow… now that’s a fine idea! You see, the shot must be taken. And not having a suitable subject is seldom much of a problem when there is borrowing to be had. Once again I selected a nice little rose for my photography, and, ah, er … borrowed it. This little rose is very, very little. It measures under 1″ wide in real life… it’s quite small, but thanks to a little creativity, it is presented here for you larger than life. It is nominally part of a mini-rose plant (and yes, I left the rest of the plant intact, although there was a dicey moment in there where I thought that perhaps the plant itself was in the way, and eyeing a pair of scissors thought of a solution. Just as I was about to implement said solution I realized that this would not be a wise move, seeing as how I value my life, and quickly thought up another plan) and it just begged to have its picture taken. The Baby’s Breath (perhaps a tad past its prime, I’ll admit) added a little dimension to the photo, and here we have Borrowed Rose.

Something Old,
Something New,
Something Borrowed,
And now she’s Blue.

Uh-oh. My borrowing was just discovered. I need to run…

A daisy poses with dramatic [...]

Drama Daisy, originally uploaded by ifringe.

Daisies, as it turns out, are a whole lot of fun.

They are patient. They don’t wiggle or squirm or fidget or even move while you try to work out the shot you want. They don’t fuss when you move them this way and that. They don’t complain at all when you stop for a moment and are exactly where you left them when they come back. All in all, daisies are a whole lot of fun to work with.

Which brings us to this particular shot. I was looking for bold and dramatic; something vibrant and bold, something vivid and something that popped off the background. Once again seizing upon the daisies as the perfect subject, it was time to see what I could do. And, all in all, I am pretty pleased with how they turned out. I ended up using a ton of lights to get the effect that I wanted (including a flashlight, but we won’t talk about that. I was desperate, OK?) which, I am sure, has made the local power company really happy with me today. The things we do for a photograph.

And here is the final result…drama daisy.
